Yes, Petiole Pro was created so that smart people like you, who don't have expensive equipment, can easily measure precise leaf area using only the camera on a smartphone, to get more data for your experiment! Let me show you how it works:
1️⃣ Install the app, print calibrating DIY calibrating plate or buy it, take smartphone with you to the field or lab. Yes, the app works without internet connection!
2️⃣ Take photo of your leaf on calibrating plate or next to it, on a contrast background. Make sure you see all eight markers on the calibrating plate - this impacts accuracy.
3️⃣ Record measurements or save them right in the app.
How does Petiole Pro work for leaf area measurement? Just follow these three steps: take an image of the leaf on a calibrating plate or next to it, upload the image to Petiole Pro, and receive measurements for leaf area, leaf parameters, leaf width, and leaf length—all from one photo.

What is better - Petiole Pro or ImageJ?

We believe that Petiole Pro is the next-level generation for leaf area measurement with smartphones. You can check the comparison of results of Petiole Pro measurements, ImageJ and grid paper. Petiole Pro includes advanced leaf area algorithm you can check accuracy by yourself, using this free QA calibrating plate for each session to provide you with the most reliable data about your plants.

What is the accuracy of mobile application Petiole?

We constantly work on the accuracy of the leaf area algorithm. As of March 2024, for Petiole Pro the accuracy is around ± 0.03 sq cm for small leaves.

Where can I get a calibration pads to measure leaf area?

Link to calibration pad for Petiole Pro is sent automatically to your email address. If you have not got it yet, check your Junk/Spam folder. You can also find DIY calibrating plates in the app. Otherwise, drop us an email to support@petioleapp.com

Can I use a ruler or a standard size coin for Petiole Pro and vice versa?

Calibration pads for Petiole Pro serve as a benchmark for measurements. In other words, calibration pads for Petiole Pro can be used only for this mobile application. It is not expected to use any other measuring ethalon as a standard for Petiole Pro measurements.

Do I need to have a measuring stand? Is it important?

It's up to you. You can get precise data about the area of your leaves holding a smartphone in your hands. Also, you can get an accurate leaf area measurement placing your smartphone on a tripod or any other smartphone holder. We improved our algorithm and now a measuring stand is not crucially important to have it.

Where can I buy a measuring stand for Petiole Pro if I wish to use it?

In fact, you don't need to purchase anything! Many researchers utilize stacks of books, boxes, bottles, and tripods to support a smartphone, using this setup to maintain a consistent height for each measurement. If you prefer, consider purchasing a mobile holder, such as a 'lazy arm' or a similar product, to use for leaf area measurement. We will soon introduce several new accessories in the Petiole Pro Store to ensure you're fully equipped.

I am a student and cannot pay for Petiole Pro. Do you have any credit options?
